Maxine Waters: ‘Sessions should be fired’
Rep. Maxine Waters (D-Calif.) on Wednesday said Attorney General Jeff Sessions should be fired following a report that he failed to disclose his contacts with Russia’s ambassador on a security clearance form.
“We can’t go a day w/o learning a new lie re: Trump’s team & Russia. Sessions should be fired. He has no business leading DOJ. Get him out!” Waters wrote on Twitter.
CNN on Wednesday reported that Sessions failed to disclose two meetings last year with Russian Ambassador Sergey Kislyak on his SF-86 form.
The Department of Justice dismissed the report, noting that Sessions met with many foreign officials while serving as a senator.
“As a United States Senator, the Attorney General met hundreds—if not thousands—of foreign dignitaries and their staff,” spokesman Ian Prior said in a statement.
“In filling out the SF-86 form, the Attorney General’s staff consulted with those familiar with the process, as well as the FBI investigator handling the background check, and was instructed not to list meetings with foreign dignitaries and their staff connected with his Senate activities.”
Sessions faced criticism earlier this year after a report said he failed to disclose during his Senate confirmation hearing conversations with Kislyak that took place during the 2016 presidential campaign. Sessions at the time said he did not mislead Congress, arguing the conversations with Kislyak were part of his job in the Senate.
Sessions recused himself from the Justice Department’s probe into Russia’s interference in the presidential election following the report.
