A nationwide “March Against Sharia” took place in cities across the United States Saturday, led by a conservative group called Act for America and organized in part by other far-right groups.
The group leading the march describes itself as “the NRA of national security”, and has been labeled an anti-Muslim hate group by the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC).
Despite being one of the largest nationwide events coordinated by Act for America, which more than 520,000 members, the events reportedly had slim attendance. Facebook event pages for marches in Indianapolis and Chicago had under 70 people who RSVP’d, though more could have attended.
According to a report by NBC News, more than 100 protesters and 200 counter-protesters clashed in downtown Manhattan Saturday morning.
The “March Against Sharia” first gained nationwide attention when Portland, Oregon Mayor Ted Wheeler moved to stop a march in the city after a white supremacist fatally stabbed two men trying to protect two Muslim women from the man’s aggravated anti-Muslim outburst.
Act for America’s website says the group is “committed to protecting women and children from Sharia Law and its impact on Muslim women and children including honor killing and female genital mutilation.”
